Dear Son,
Just a few lines to let you know I'm still alive. I writing this slowly 'cause I know you can't read fast. You won't know the house when you come home 'cause we've moved. About your father, he has a lovely new job. He has 500 men under him. He cuts grass at the cemetary. Your sister, Mary, had a baby this morning. I haven't found out if it's a boy or girl so I don't know yet if you're an aunt or uncle. I went to the doctor on Thursday. Father came with. The doctor put a tube in my mouth and told me not to talk for 10 minutes. Father offered to buy it from him. You uncle Patrick drowned last week in a vat of whiskey. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely. They've cremated him and it took 3 days to put the fire out. It only rained twice this week. Once for 3 days and then for 4. We got a letter from the undertaker. He said if the last payment on your grandmother's plot hasn't been paid for in 7 days, up she comes. Your Lovin' Mother P.S. I would've sent 5 pounds, but I've already sealed the envelope.
